2012 Key Issues Scholarship Announcement

The Mojave Environmental Education Consortium is proud to announce an exciting opportunity for Grade 5 to 8 teachers to earn a full scholarship to attend Key Issues: Bringing Environmental Issues to the Classroom, a national teacher training institute located in Silverthorne, Colorado, this summer.

This once-in-a-lifetime educational opportunity is made possible by the Antelope Valley Air Quality Management District, Boeing, Lockheed Martin Aeronautics-Palmdale, the Los Angeles County Sanitation Districts and MEEC. This year, three Antelope Valley teachers will be chosen to partake in the Keystone Center for Education’s innovative program, which equips educators with the skills and confidence to explore local and global environmental issues with their students using a non-biased, standards-based framework. Additionally, two teachers from the San Bernardino County High Desert or Riverside County’s Blythe region will be selected to attend Key Issues this summer.

Using Colorado’s spectacular ecosystems as its setting, Key Issues combines classroom time with outdoor exploration of the natural environment. In addition to enjoying professional networking opportunities with teachers from across the country, each participant receives interdisciplinary, standards-based curriculum materials and software to take back to his/her classroom. Airfare, lodging and meals are included as part of the scholarship recipient’s award and participants may select to attend any one of three six-day sessions held between June 26 and July 29, 2012.

You are invited to apply for one of the five Key Issues scholarships available this year to local teachers of grades 5-8 (applicants should teach at least one of the core subject areas: science, social studies, and math or language arts.) Please share the attached program application and fact sheet with other qualified teachers who may be interested in attending. The deadline for submitting applications packages is April 2, 2012.
